Kojagari or Kojagari Poornima

Kojagara or Kojagari is an important festival in some regions of India. Kojagari is celebrated to worship the Goddess of prosperity, Lakshmi. This festival is observed on the night of full moon in the month of Ashwina. “Kojagara “, literally means the night of awakening. It is also a festival of Goddess Lakshmi who descends on the earth on this auspicious night to bless all with health and prosperity.

Kojagari is one of the most important festivals of Central India, particularly the Budelkand region and in some part of Bihar, particularly Darbanga and Madhubani region. In Bihar Kojagara is one of the important festivals for the newly wed, people celebrate the whole night in festivity and games of amusement.

This ceremony owes its origin to the Kojagari Purnima Vrat sacred to the Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Indra on this night. The ritual is to fast the whole day and after worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Indra at night break their fasts by offering coconut water and flattened rice to the Gods. It seems on this Kojagari night Goddess Lakshmi visits every house asking “Ko Jagarti” meaning `who is awake’ to ascertain. And those who are awake Goddess Lakshmi blesses them with fortune and prosperity. To welcome Her, Houses, temples, streets etc. are illuminated.

This Kojagari Vrat or celebration coincides with the harvest festival. It is also called `Navanna’ (new food) and from this day the new grain of the harvest is usually eaten. It is likely that the full moon shining with its beauty in the pleasant Sharad ‘ritu’ must have given its importance and tempted people to meet together enjoying and feasting under the canopy of the magnificent moonlight, giving birth to a Festival.

In the western state of Gujarat, the night is known as Sharad Poonam. In Gujarat people celebrate it by doing Garba and Raas.

Currently, this full moon comes during Sharad ritu (season ) of the year and hence it is called Sharad Pornima or Sharad Poonam. (Purnima or Poonam = full moon).

This is a prime festival for Bengali’s also. After durga puja this is a festival celebrated almost every house in Bengal.

There is an Ayurvedic reason behind eating cool Milk & Rice flakes on this night. Sharad ritu (season) consists of those two months season change when Summer is ending and Winter slowly starts. During Sharad time days are very hot and nights are becoming more cooler. This is perfect season for Pitta prakop when pitta vitiates along with other two doshas.

Following are the date calendar of some important festivals celebrated in Mithilanchal ( Bihar ) | Mithila Panchang

Sunday October 12 was a special day for Christians in India as one of them Sister Alphonsa was canonised and elevated to Saint by the Vatican.

The shadow of the anti-Christian violence on the ceremony didn’t dampen the celebrations for Kottayam where people worship her shrine.

The shrine has become the shrine of a saint. The burial place of Sister Alphonsa has been a pilgrimage spot for decades. Now that she has become a Saint, the numbers will only increase.

“The entire district of Kottayam is proud of its home-grown saint — particularly her family,” said M M Devasia, a retired teacher.

There were 3 others canonised apart from Sister Alphonsa Others to be canonised on the occasion included the Ecuadorian Narcisa de Jesus Martillo Moran (1832-1869), Swiss nun Maria Bernarda Buetler (1848-1924), a missionary in Colombia, and Italian Gaetano Errico (1791-1860) from Secondigliano, in the Naples region.

Recalling in his homily the life of the new woman saint, who belonged to the Franciscan Clarist order, the Pope said she had been “an exceptional woman, who today is offered to the people of India as their first canonised woman saint.”

Following is the biography of Sister Alphonsa prepared by Vatican

“Blessed Alphonsa of the immaculate conception was born in Kudamalur, the Arpookara region, in the diocese of Changanacherry, India, on the 19th of August 1910, of the ancient and noble family of Muttathupadathu.

From her birth, the life of the Blessed was marked by the cross, which would be progressively revealed to her as the royal way to conform herself to Christ. Her mother, Maria Puthukari, gave birth to her prematurely, in her eight month of pregnancy, as a result of a fright she received when, during the sleep, a snake wrapped itself around her waist. Eight days later, the 28 of August, the child was baptised according to the Syro-Malabar rite by the Fr. Joseph Chackalayil, and she received the name Annakutty, a diminutive of Anne. She was the last of five children.

Her mother died three months later. Annakutty passed her early infancy in the home of her grandparents in Elumparambil. There she lived a particularly happy time because of her human and Christian formation, during which the first seeds of a vocation flowered. Her grand-mother, a pious and charitable woman, communicated the joy of the faith, love for prayer and a surge of charity towards the poor to her. At five years of age the child already knew how to lead, with a totally childish enthusiasm, the evening prayer of the family gathered, in accordance with the Syro-Malabar custom, in the “prayer room”.

Annakutty received the Eucharistic bread for the first time on the 11 of November 1917. She used to say to her friends: “Do you know why I am so particularly happy today? It is because I have Jesus in my heart!” In a letter to her spiritual father, on the 30 of November 1943, she confided the following: “Already from the age of seven I was no longer mine. I was totally dedicated to my divine Spouse. Your reverence knows it well”.

In the same year of 1917 she began to attend the elementary school of Thonnankuzhy, where she also established a sincere friendship with the Hindu children. When the first school cycle ended in 1920, the time had come to transfer to Muttuchira, to the house of her aunt Anna Murickal, to whom her mother, before she died, had entrusted her as her adoptive mother.

Her aunt was a severe and demanding woman, at times despotic and violent in demanding obedience from Annakutty in her every minimal disposition or desire. Assiduous in her religious practice, she accompanied her niece, but did not share the young girl’s friendship with the Carmelites of the close-by Monastery or her long periods of prayer at the foot of the altar. She was, in fact, determined to procure an advantageous marriage for Annakutty, obstructing the clear signs of her religious vocation.

The virtue of the Blessed was manifested in accepting this severe and rigid education as a path of humility and patience for the love of Christ, and tenaciously resisted the reiterated attempts at engagement to which the aunt tried to oblige her. Annakutty, in order to get out from under a commitment to marriage, reached the point of voluntarily causing herself a grave burn by putting her foot into a heap of burning embers. “My marriage was arranged when I was thirteen years old. What had I to do to avoid it? I prayed all that night… then an idea came tome. If my body were a little disfigured no one would want me! … O, how I suffered! I offered all for my great intention”.

The proposal to defile her singular beauty did not fully succeed in freeing her from the attentions of suitors. During the following years the Blessed had to defend her vocation, even during the year of probation when an attempt to give her in marriage, with the complicity of the Mistress of Formation herself, was made. “O, the vocation which I received! A gift of my good God!…. God saw the pain of my soul in those days. God distanced the difficulties and established me in this religious state”.

It was Fr. James Muricken, her confessor, who directed her towards Franciscan spirituality and put her in contact with the Congregation of the Franciscan Clarists. Annakutty entered their college in Bharananganam in the diocese of Palai, to attend seventh class, as an intern student, on the 24th of May 1927. The following year, on the 2nd of August 1928, Annakutty began her postulancy, taking the name of Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception in honour of St. Alphonsus Liguori, whose feast it was that day. She was clothed in the religious habit on the 19th of May 1930, during the first pastoral visit made to Bharananganam by the Bishop, Msgr. James Kalacherry.

The period 1930-1935 was characterised by grave illness and moral suffering. She could teach the children in the school at Vakakkad only during the scholastic year 1932. Then, because of her weakness, she carried out the duties of assistant-teacher and catechist in the parish. She was engaged also as secretary, especially to write official letters because of her beautiful script.

The canonical novitiate was introduced into the Congregation of the Franciscan Clarists in 1934. Though wishing to enter immediately, the Blessed was only admitted on the 12th of August 1935 because of her ill health. About one week after the beginning of her novitiate, she had a haemorrhage from the nose and eyes and a profound organic wasting and purulent wounds on her legs. The illness deteriorated, to such a point that the worst was feared.

Heaven came to the rescue of the holy novice. During a novena to The Servant of God Fr. Kuriakose Elia Chavara - a Carmelite who today is a Blessed-she wasmiraculously and instantaneously cured.

Having restarted her novitiate, she wrote the following proposals in her spiritual diary: “I do not wish to act or speak according to my inclinations. Every time I fail, I will do penance… I want to be careful never to reject anyone. I will only speak sweet words to others. I want to control my eyes with rigour. I will ask pardon of the Lord for every little failure and I will atone for it through penance. No matter what my sufferings may be, I will never complain and if I have to undergo any humiliation, I will seek refuge in the Sacred Heart of Jesus”.

The 12th of August 1936, the feast of St. Clare, the day of her perpetual profession, was a day of inexpressible spiritual joy. She had realised her desire, guarded for a long time in her heart and confided to her sister Elizabeth when she was only 12 years old: “Jesus is my only Spouse, and none other”.

Jesus, however, wished to lead His spouse to perfection through a life of suffering. “I made my perpetual profession on the 12th of August 1936 and came here to Bharanganam on the following 14th. From that time, it seems, I was entrusted with a part of the cross of Christ. There are abundant occasions of suffering… I have a great desire to suffer with joy. It seems that my Spouse wishes to fulfil this desire”.

Painful illnesses followed each other: typhoid fever, double pneumonia, and, the most serious of all, a dramatic nervous shock, the result of a fright on seeing a thief during the night of the 18th of October 1940. Her state of psychic incapacity lasted for about a year, during which she was unable to read or write.

In every situation, Sister Alphonsa always maintained a great reservation and charitable attitude towards the Sisters, silently undergoing her sufferings. In 1945 she had a violent outbreak of illness. A tumour, which had spread throughout her organs, transformed her final year of life into a continuous agony. Gastroenteritis and liver problems caused violent convulsions and vomiting up to forty times a day: “I feel that the Lord has destined me to be an oblation, a sacrifice of suffering… I consider a day in which I have not suffered as a day lost to me”.

With this attitude of a victim for the love of the Lord, happy until the final moment and with a smile of innocence always on her lips, Sister Alphonsa quietly and joyfully brought her earthly journey to a close in the convent of the Franciscan Clarists at Bharananganam at 12.30 on the 28th July 1946, leaving behind the memory of a Sister full of love and a saint.

Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception Muttathupadathu was proclaimed blessed by Pope John Paul II in Kottayam, India, on the 8th of February 1986.

With today’s Canonisation, the Church in India presents its first Saint to the veneration of the faithful of the whole world. Faithful from every part of the world have come together in a single act of thanksgiving to God in her name and in a sign of the great oriental and western traditions, Roman and Malabar, which Sr. Alphonsa lived and harmonised in her saintly life.

Columbus Day

Many countries in the New World and elsewhere celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas, which occurred on October 12, 1492 in the Julian calendar and October 21, 1492 in the modern Gregorian calendar, as an official holiday. The day is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States, as Día de la Raza (Day of the Race) in many countries in Latin America, as Día de las Culturas (Day of the Cultures) in Costa Rica, as Discovery Day in The Bahamas, as Día de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day) and National Day in Spain, and as Día de la Resistencia Indígena (Day of Indigenous Resistance) in Venezuela.

Columbus day celebrations commemorate the Genoese explorer’s first expedition across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. Columbus, on commission by the Spanish monarchy, was hoping to find a new naval route to India and the other nations of the East, but instead found the American continent which was virtually unknown to Europeans at the time. Columbus’s sailor Rodrigo de Triana was the first on the voyage to spot land in the New World; he found the island the natives called Guanahani at approximately 2:00 AM on October 12, 1492. The exact location of this island is unknown, though it was somewhere in the Bahamas. Columbus’s expedition launched the first large-scale European colonization of the Americas.

Mary Kay letourneau, heroine of one of the most talked about teacher-student relationships. Its about a middle age women falling in love with her 13 year student Vili Fualaau and getting pregnant with him. Mary Kay letourneau was subsequently jailed for Child rape, she was in jail for few years and she was released on paroll for good behavior, but on release she again got pregnant with Vili Fualaau, and subsequently again put in jail. After spending few more years in jail she was released and by the time Vili Fualaau was 21 and they both married. Hmmmmmmmm that was the story in very brief, read the wikipedia version of the story in a bit detail. If you want to read the full story about Mary Kay Letourneau then go to the link at the end of the post.

Courtesy Wikipedia

Mary Fualaau (born January 30, 1962 in Orange County, California[1] (formerly Mary Kay Letourneau, née Mary Katherine Schmitz) is a former schoolteacher famous for having an affair with a young student, giving birth to two children by him, and later marrying him after being convicted of statutory rape and serving several years in prison.

Background

Mary Kay Letourneau’s father was John G. Schmitz, a Roman Catholic U.S. Congressman from Orange County, California and a professor at Santa Ana College. Schmitz was generally considered one of the more conservative members of the House, and he ran for President of the United States in 1972 on the conservative American Independent Party ticket.

Her mother, Mary Schmitz, was a homemaker and anti-feminist activist. Mary Kay was one of seven children born to the couple, but she also has two half-siblings who were the result of a longtime affair between her father and his mistress. One of Mary Kay’s brothers, Joseph E. Schmitz, was appointed Inspector General of the Department of Defense by George W. Bush.

Mary Kay Schmitz married Steve Letourneau on June 30, 1984. The couple had two daughters and two sons.

The teacher-student relationship

Letourneau first met Vili Fualaau (born June 26, 1983) when he was a student in her second grade class at Shorewood Elementary School in Burien, Washington. He was then eight years old; she was 29. She became his teacher again when he was in the sixth grade, and their sexual relationship began during the summer of 1996, when Vili was 13 and she was 34. Her husband became aware of the situation when he read their letters to each other in February of 1997 and revealed it to family members. His cousin then reported the relationship to local child protection services.

Legal matters

On February 26, 1997, Letourneau was arrested for statutory rape, which is called “child rape” in Washington. Four months later, she gave birth to Fualaau’s daughter, Audrey Lokelani Fualaau. On August 7, 1997, she pled guilty to two counts of second-degree statutory rape. She was sentenced to 89 months in prison by Judge Linda Lau.

The prison term was suspended, and Letourneau was sentenced to serve six months in county jail and enroll in a three-year sex offender treatment program. She was released from jail early on (January 1, 1998) for good behavior, on the condition that she not see Fualaau. However, on February 3, 1998, police discovered Letourneau in a car with Fualaau and arrested her for violating the conditions of her suspended sentence. She had also failed to comply with her sex offender treatment program. In the car, police found $6,500 in cash, baby clothes, and a passport, indicating that Letourneau had been planning to leave the country. The original sentence of seven and a half years was reimposed.

In March 1998, prison officials discovered that Letourneau was pregnant with another child by Fualaau. Their second daughter, Georgia Fualaau, was born in Tacoma on October 16, 1998. Hours after the birth, Mary Kay Letourneau was returned to prison. In November, 1999, Letourneau was placed in solitary confinement for six months for smuggling letters to Fualaau. In January, 2001, Letourneau’s father died. She asked to attend his funeral, but the request was denied.

In May 1999, while Mary Kay Letourneau was in prison, Letourneau and her first husband, Steve Letourneau, were divorced. Steve was given custody of their four children. He remarried and moved the family to Alaska.

In 2000, Fualaau’s family sued the Highline School District and the city of Des Moines, Washington for emotional suffering, lost wages, and the costs of rearing his two children, claiming the school had failed to protect him from Letourneau.[2] The jury ruled against them and no damages were awarded.

Life after prison

Mary Kay Letourneau was released on parole on August 4, 2004. She will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of her life unless a judge lifts the requirement.

Two days after her release, Vili Fualaau, who was by then 21, applied to the court to lift the no-contact order; the request was granted. Letourneau and Fualaau were married on May 20, 2005 in the Seattle suburb of Woodinville in a ceremony at the Columbia Winery, covered by the media. Access to the wedding was strictly controlled by the television show Entertainment Tonight, which had paid for exclusive access, though photographs were released to other media outlets. Mary Kay Letourneau now goes by the legal name of Mary Fualaau.

In countries like India, great maps and comprehensive local data are hard to come by. And traditional mapping approaches are stretched to the limit in such environments, where infrastructure and local businesses are evolving at a furious pace.

This need inspired us in Google India to design and build Google Map Maker, which enables users everywhere over to create rich, deep maps and fresh local data. People can mark their favorite spots in their cities and hometowns, add features such as roads, parks, and buildings, tag small businesses to help users find them, and collaborate to map neighborhoods of interest. This product is motivated by the spirit of information democracy, where people can create information that are moderated and consumed by their peers. By Lalitesh Katragadda, Software Engineer and creator, Google Map Maker in Offcial Google Blog.

Source : Official Google Blog http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/08/empowering-users-to-map-their-worlds.html

Google Mapmaker was launched in India in August and since then like other google products has been very popular. Google map is the creation of Google India based in Bangalore. Google Map maker is a way to add or edit features, such as roads, businesses, parks, schools, and place them on a map. After submitting the information, it will be available at the Map Maker sites for other users to edit it and you could expect to see it live in Google Maps when Google decides there’s enough information.

Google recommends to use the hybrid view to locate places precisely and to zoom in to a range of 50m to 1km. You can add businesses using placemarks, mark roads with the line tool and add parks using polygons.

The data used in Google Maps is sourced from NAVTEQ and Tele Atlas, two big mapping companies. They, in turn, have obtained some of this data from national mapping agencies (such as the Ordnance Survey). Since they’ve made multi-million pound investments in gathering this data, these organizations are understandably protective of their copyright.”

About Patna University (http://www.patnauniversity.ac.in)

Patna University is the 7th oldest University of the Indian subcontinent, which was established in the year 1917 to cater to the growing needs of higher education of Bihar, Orissa and Nepal. The history of Patna University is closely linked with the history of modern Bihar – the saga of her educational, cultural, political and economic growth. It is a hallmark in the annals of the progress of the State in particular and region in general. Patna University is the only teaching and residential university in the populous State of Bihar. Patna University also has a truly national character which transcends the linguistic, cultural and political boundaries. The outstanding personalities involved in top administrative positions, well qualified learned teachers and students have largely contributed towards its rich academic heritage.

Bihar has been a seat of learning since time immemorial. The State had the Universities like Nalanda and Vikramshila that were drawing students even from neighboring countries. One of the primary objectives of the University education is to produce trained manpower, which can accelerate sustained economic growth by harnessing science and technology.

In order to face the challenges thrown by the process of globalization and liberalization in the field of higher education in the 21st century, the Patna University will have to equip its teachers and students with modern techniques, skills, and make them competent enough to face challenges and enhance the quality of teaching & research. For meeting these challenges, Patna University has already focused its attention and started a number of professional courses at the graduation and post graduation level with a view to building human resources of high quality, who can contribute to the Nation-building. In this age of Information and Communication Technology, the barriers of time and space have now disappeared. We are providing the facilities of Internet, Teleconferencing, online library facilities etc. and we have introduced new courses in the areas of emerging importance like Biotechnology, Biochemistry, BCA, MCA, Fashion Designing, Sales Management, Business Management, Rural Management, Functional English, Saral Sanskrit Sambhashan, Journalism and Mass Communication etc. However, the avowed goal of the University Education still remains character building. It is true that modern knowledge, information and skills help to provide quality education but the most important task of education is to produce enlightened citizens, having human touch and dedication to the cause of the nation and its society at large.
Patna University has been imparting quality education to its students, which is amply reflected in th success of our students at the all India level competitions. Even today Patna University holds important positions in the Central Services Examination. In the year of women empowerment we have accorded great significance to the education of women and for that the University started commerce education in Patna Women’s College and Magadh Mahila College. Out of thirteen constituent Colleges, three of them are exclusively meant for girls and the other eight are Co-educational Institutions where the number of girl students is fairly large. Patna University has tried to provide benefits to the socially and economically deprived groups, handicapped students and also to the weaker sections of the society. In this regard the university has, strictly followed the reservation policy of the Government. and provided them facilities so that they can unfold their potentialities and prove themselves as worthy members of the society.

Patna University has N. S. S., N. C. C., Sports and Fine Arts Board which keep the University humming with life all the year round with extra-curricular activities. One of our N.S.S. volunteers, Sushree Shruti Anand was awarded the Indira Gandhi N.S.S. award. Sushree Mili Sinha was awarded Gold Medal in Discus Throw in All Indian Inter University Athletics Competition at Gulbarga. Volunteers from 14 States participated in the National Integration Camp, 2003 supported financially by Ministry of Youth and Sports, Govt. of India.
The people of the state are now becoming conscious, rather restless, on this sad plight and the persistent neglect of the growth of higher education in Bihar. The demand of conversion of Patna University into a Central University has been long pending. Questions have been raised on several occasions in the Parliament but the same have been turned down on some plea or the other. Of late, the financial position of this university which was once a monumental centre of learning has deteriorated to such an extent that it is almost impossible to preserve even the semblance of its true character and its glorious tradition.

It is in this backdrop that the long pending proposal of the Central take over of Patna University is being presented so that the true monumental character of this prestigious institution is preserved and it is able to play its legitimate role in the onward march of the nation.
